Campfire Safety

< Back to Blog

There’s nothing quite like gathering around a crackling campfire under the starlit sky, sharing stories and roasting marshmallows with loved ones. However, it’s important to prioritize safety when enjoying the outdoors, especially when it comes to building and maintaining campfires. At Harrison Bluffs Campground, we want all our visitors to have a memorable and safe experience. That’s why we’ve put together these essential campfire safety tips for your next adventure:

  1. Only Use Designated Fire Pits:
Use the designated fire ring or pit for your campfire at your campsite. Ensure that there are no tents, chairs or other flammable objects within 10 feet of the fire.
  2. Prepare Your Fire:
Gather dry wood, kindling, and newspaper to start your fire. Avoid using accelerants such as gasoline or lighter fluid, as they can cause the fire to quickly get out of control. Instead, use a lighter or matches to ignite the fire safely.
  3. Monitor Your Fire:
Once your fire is burning, never leave it unattended. Assign a responsible adult to supervise the fire at all times, especially when children or pets are present. Put out your campfire before going to sleep for the night. Keep a bucket of water, sand or a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.
  4. Control the Size of Your Fire:
Build your fire to a manageable size, keeping it no larger than necessary for your needs. Avoid stacking wood too high or allowing flames to extend beyond the confines of the fire ring. This helps prevent sparks and embers from igniting nearby vegetation.
  5. Keep The Area Clean:
Fire pits must be free of nails, glass, and garbage. Please don’t throw garbage in the fire pits.
  6. Extinguish Your Fire Properly:
When you’re ready to extinguish your fire, use water to douse the flames completely. Stir the ashes and embers with a shovel or stick to ensure everything is thoroughly soaked. Continue adding water until the hissing sounds stop and the ashes are cool to the touch.
  7. Respect Local Regulations:
Before lighting a campfire, familiarize yourself with any fire restrictions or regulations in the area. If a fire band is in place, do not start a fire; you may be subject to criminal prosecution. Always practice responsible fire behavior. We reserve the right to extinguish any campfires we find to be dangerous in any way.

By following these campfire safety tips, you can enjoy the warmth and camaraderie of a campfire while minimizing the risk of accidents or wildfires. At Harrison Bluffs Campground, we prioritize the safety and well-being of our visitors, ensuring that everyone can experience the joys of camping in a safe and responsible manner. So gather ’round, share stories, and make memories—all while staying safe and mindful of the environment. Check out the Rules & Safety for more information. Happy camping!
